Les couleurs commencent à changer. J'avais laissé libre cours à l'imagination de Marmotte Numéro Trois qui a décidé que ce serait mieux dans l'ordre des couleurs de l'arc-en-ciel... Qu'à cela ne tienne ! Voici donc les lettres de ce mois... toujours l'écriture Cursive Gestuelle dans son petit carré rougeoyant (on croirait le nom pompeux d'un plat de restaurant...)

The colors begin to change. I had free rein to the imagination of Groundhog Number Three who decided it would be better in the order of colors in the rainbow ... Never mind! Here are the letters of this month ... Always Cursive Gestures in his small glowing square (you'd think the pompous name of a restaurant dish ...)

Au moins on commence à pouvoir constater que je connais mon alphabet ;)

Une lettre par semaine - Avril / A letter a week - April

Voici donc un "M" réalisé avec une "Cursive Gestuelle" que je suis en train de travailler en cours... IL y a du boulot ! Pour les spirales, j'ai utilisé le papier dans lequel j'avais perforé la spirale... comme un pochoir...


Here is an "M" made with "Gesture Cursive" I'm working in progress ... THERE has to work! For the spirals, I used the paper in which I punched the spiral ... as a template ...

Et un "N" sorti tout droit de mes premiers essais de calligraphie, il y a fort, fort, fort longtemps... ma première année... Alphabet "Foundational Hand"... Il s'agit d'une écriture utilisée pour les besoins d'apprentissage... Le fond est réalisé avec les mêmes peintures pour rester dans la même gamme de couleurs, mais j'ai ajouté la technique du film étirable...

And an "N" straight out of my first attempts at calligraphy, it is very, very, very long time ... my first year ... Alphabet "Foundational Hand" ... This is a script used for the purpose of learning ... The bottom is made with the same paintings to remain in the same range of colors, but I loved the art stretch film.

... Un "O" qui vient d'un alphabet que j'aime bien, d' Arthur Baker... Là, j'ai séché, alors j'ai juste tracé le contour dans une couleur sombre...

... An "O" which has an alphabet that I like, Arthur Baker ... Here, I have dried, so I just traced the outline in a dark ...

Et un "P"  d'un alphabet "semi Onciale Irlandaise"... C'est irlandais, ça ne peut pas être mauvais... ;) J'ai encore utilisé une perforatrice pour avoir un pochoir... Ca tient la route... Simpliste... mais à garder en mémoire à l'occasion...

And a "p" an alphabet "semi Uncial Irish" ... It's Irish, it can not be bad ... ;) I still used a punch to have a stencil ... It holds the road ... Simplistic ... but to remember the occasion ...

Je dois admettre que je n'ai pas tout à fait le temps de réaliser mes lettres le projet "une lettre à la semaine pour 2010" ce début de mois... En fait, j'avais pris de l'avance lors des dernières vacances... J'avais écrit les lettres, il ne me restait plus qu'à les mettre en couleurs... ;) J'ai gardé bien évidemment les mêmes peintures pour rester dans la même gamme de couleurs, mais j'avais continué à chercher des alphabets différents... toujours dans le livre de David Harris, "Calligraphie : cent alphabets"...

I must admit that I did not quite time to make my letters the project "one letter per week for 2010 early this month ... In fact, I had taken the lead during the last holiday ... I wrote the letters, I just had to put them in color ... ;) I obviously kept the same paintings to remain in the same range of colors, but I continued to search for different scripts ... always in the book by David Harris, "Calligraphy: One hundred alphabets" ...

Et j'ai trouvé une "Capitale foundationales" à la page 68... garnie de gouttes ... Efficace... mais salissant... pour le bout du doigt... ;)

And I found a "foundational Capital" on page 68 ... garnished with drops ... Effective ... but dirty ... for fingertip ... ;)

... une "Capitale Rustique" à la page 50... J'ai recouvert de bleu et ajouté quelques arabesques...

... une "capitale Bénéventine moderne" p 72... Encore des gouttes et une paille cette fois... Difficile de contrôler la trajectoire de la trace, mais là-encore, ça peut réussir quelquefois...

... et une "capitale Gothique" p 100... Pour changer, des couleurs moins diluées... des tâches "appliquées" au pinceau... et un peu trop absorbées à l'essuie-tout de papier, ce qui a "masqué" un peu de la lettre...

Voici donc ma deuxième série... J'ai gardé les mêmes peintures pour rester dans la même gamme de couleurs, mais j'ai continué à chercher des alphabets différents...

Pas facile uniquement dans mon stock... Alors j'ai regardé dans le livre de David Harris, "Calligraphie : cent alphabets", si certains me plaisaient un peu...

Not only easy in my inventory ... Then I looked in the book by David Harris, "Calligraphy: One hundred alphabets, though some I liked a little ...

Et j'ai trouvé une "Capitale carolingienne libre moderne" à la page 64...
And I found a "modern free Carolingian Capital" on page 64 ...

... une "Capitale fraktur" à la page 120...

... une "capitale Rotunda à double fût" p 160...
"Capital Rotunda with a double ... " p 160 ... (the translator failed to translate "fût")

... et une "capitale Neuland" p 174...

Finalement ce projet m'aura donné l'avantage d'aller feuilleter dans mes livres pour trouver des idées d'alphabets à travailler éventuellement... Ce n'est déjà pas si mal...

Finally this project have given me the advantage to go browsing in my books to find ideas for scripts to work any ... This is not so bad ...

Lettres de janvier... un peu en retard - Letters from January ... a little late

En cherchant des blogs de calligraphie, je suis tombée sur votre blog et je me suis dit que c'était une bonne idée pour prendre le temps de calligraphier plus régulièrement... Alors j'ai commencé à essayer de réaliser mes petites lettres... Comme mes compétences en anglais sont déplorables, j'utiliserai un traducteur et je vous prie de bien vouloir m'excuser par avance s'il y a des erreurs.


Looking for blogs calligraphy, I came across your blog and I thought it was a good idea to take the time to calligraphy more regularly ... So I started trying to make my little letters ... As my English skills are poor, I will use a translator, please accept my apologies in advance if there are errors.

Je vais relier les supports ensemble sur un "livret", j'ai donc voulu une "certaine" unité... Alors j'ai bien pensé à garder le même alphabet... ou bien à garder les mêmes couleurs... Mais je me suis dit que sur un livret entier, cela risquait d'être lassant... J'ai pensé également à "que des alphabets différents" ou "que des techniques différentes", mais je me suis dit que je n'en aurais pas assez à mon actif pour 26 lettres... Quant à "que des couleurs différentes", cela posait le problème de manque d'unité de mon livret...

I am connecting carriers together on a "book", so I wanted a "certain" unit ... So I thought well to keep the same alphabet ... or keep the same color ... But I thought that a whole book, it might be boring ... I also thought "that different alphabets" or "that different techniques, but I told myself that I should not have enough under my belt for 26 letters ... As for that "different colors", this posed the problem of lack of unity in my book ...

J'ai donc résolu pour ce premier alphabet de choisir "tous les alphabets que j'avais envie d'essayer ou que j'avais à disposition", de même que les différents outils (plumes courantes ou différentes, pinceaux, calames...) et "une gamme de couleurs brillantes". Rester dans la même gamme de couleurs donnera ensuite une unité à l'ensemble. Si je tiens la distance, je changerai de projet pour le deuxième alphabet.

So I solved for the first alphabet to choose "all the scripts I wanted to try or that I had available, as well as various tools (common or different pens, brushes, arrows, ... ) and "a range of brilliant colors. Stay in the same range of colors will then give a unity to all. If I want the distance, I will change project for the second alphabet.

Semaine 1 : A : Alphabet dessiné. Drawn Alphabet

Semaine 2 : B : Alphabet "Onciale". Alphabet "Uncial"

Semaine 3 : C : Autre alphabet dessiné. Other alphabet drawn.

Semaine 1 : A : Alphabet majuscule "Gothique". Alphabet uppercase "Goth".

Il ne reste que 22 lettres. ;)

My first four letters

I am a bit late but enjoyed working on this project, and above all seeing what you all have done.

I used a Ruling Pen and Pelican 4001 ink. Paper is Arches 140lb CP. The effect on the paper was achieved by using Kosher salt, sprinkled on a soon as the watercolor is applied.

January letters

After not doing any calligraphic work for three years, due to health issues that affected my husband and myself and on the way to a slowly recovering, this project is perfect for me. So, I decided to send this"Tropical Caribbean Naïve Festival of Colors". I used gouache, color pencils, pastel, acrylic copper and metal nibs.

My January letters

I have been teaching Calligraphy for about 20 years, and consider myself
more or less a traditionalist as I like to be able to read some of the words
to understand what a piece is all about. That said I am trying to be more
adventurous in my style.

I have chosen to do one alphabet depicting images of Australia that appeal
to me and the second alphabet are lettering doodles. Both of these I can
use for my students.

Attached are my first four letters. They are on Arches CP 185 gm paper done with pencil and embossing . I propose to do all the letters on the one piece in 25 embossed windows. They are all going to be miniscules and the only criteria is that I find the shapes pleasing.

So far so good, the project is making me do things which I haven't done before; has given me permission to play; and forced me to do something even if I didn't feel like it or think I had the time!

I have chosen to make my first alphabet a technique experiment alphabet - using tools and surfaces I don't normally pick up and work with. I decided that in order to keep a sense of continuity /coherence I would use a Roman Capital throughout. Interestingly I have done the letters sequentially so far... maybe I'll break out later!

A - purple marker pen, on Kozo paper, then touched with water brush.
B - I used a hot poker to burn the letter into cedar
C - rusted, steel, letter traced onto metal using a soap pencil, then engraved using a Dremel.
D - letter cut out of contact, stuck to perspex and sandpapered over on the top surface.
